The Wheel of the Year

The Ceremony of May is a poem from Rose Blakeley’s book A Pathway through the Seasons and is what first inspired Garry to start setting Rose’s words to music. The CD was completed in 2009 intentionally as a tribute to the Hastings Jack-in-the-Green Festival. The band Garatwist was created to enable performances and the show was cited as a “complete triumph” when premiered at Hastings Jack-in-the-Green and Rochester Sweeps Festival. A further performance was made at The Stables Theatre in Hastings along with Travels Through Time (a dramatic exploration of episodes from local life, smugglers and witches, entertainers and poets) where the troop received a standing ovation from a packed house. The original line-up of Garatwist has now changed, as has the name, but Garry, Rose, Edd and Jane have remained.

The Wheel of the Year was inspired by a deep and natural passion for the patterns of the year with all its associated festivals and customs. The seasons have always been of great importance to our ancestors as their very existence affected nature, man and agriculture. From these sources many unusual and wonderful traditions have risen that have evolved over time and are still very much alive today. It is a rich journey which takes us through the annual cycle, for there are many fascinating ceremonies which mark the way accompanied by a number of intriguing events and colourful celebrations.

The Garry Blakeley Band is a collaboration of highly creative artists who have a common interest in commemorating these traditions in their own unique and theatrical way, combining it with history, folklore and mysticism thus weaving a very magical spell indeed!
There is now a CD available (see home page) and there are more shows planned (see EVENTS page). So the story continues…
